Loft insulation works by preventing the escape of heat through the roof of your home - reducing the amount of fuel you need to burn to keep a comfortable temperature. This is better for both the environment and your pocket, as it keeps energy bills down.
When your home is heated, a lot of that heat escapes through your roof, both through conduction and convection. Laying loft insulation traps the warm air inside the home and keeps you warmer through the winter months. Generally speaking, the thicker your loft insulation is, the more effective it will be at stopping the heat from leaving your house – an insulation depth of 270mm is recommended.
In many homes around the UK, old, damaged or poorly fitted insulation can mean that there is a need for new insulation to be fitted. And thanks to the government-backed ECO scheme, many households around the UK can receive grant funding that covers two-thirds of the cost of new insulation – an improvement that can save more than £250 a year on energy bills.

Why might existing insulation need to be replaced?
• Existing insulation is old – having suffered wear and tear, decomposition and having been too thin in the first place
• Existing insulation is poorly fitted – gaps can enable heat to escape and reduce thermal efficiency
• Existing insulation has been subject to water damage – this reduces effectiveness dramatically
• Existing insulation has suffered damage due to remodelling work or electrical installations in the loft that have reduced effectiveness.
